Quilting Classes And Other Ways To Take Advantage Of Free Time

By Jayne Rutledge

When you suddenly find yourself with more free time than you have had in the past, it can be difficult to figure out how to use that time. Maybe you suddenly lost your job, or maybe your job is seasonal and the season has come to an end. Perhaps you have recently retired. Any of these things may provide you with extra time that you need to fill. One way to do this is through activities like quilting classes, home improvement projects, and new hobbies.

While having a wide-open schedule can be fun for a short time, it does not usually remain enjoyable. Eventually, you need things to do during your idle time. If you spend too much time sitting around, it can be easy to feel unproductive and to become depressed.

For some people, staying busy and productive comes naturally. These people may not need to go out of their way to fill their time. For others, however, it helps to take a deliberate approach and to make sure that they have commitments that will prevent them from being idle. Here are some things to keep in mind when trying to fill your free time.

1. Be open to new things. Taking a class is a perfect example of this. Chances are, there is something that you have always wanted to learn. It might be knitting, or cooking, or carpentry. Perhaps you want to learn how to write fiction. Whatever it is, sign up for class that will help you to acquire your desired skills. You can meet new people, stay occupied, and pick up a useful new hobby.

2. Ask a friend to join you. If you have a friend or family member who is also unoccupied, ask them to come along. While classes are a great way to meet new people and make new friends, it can also be helpful to have someone you know along for moral support. And the bonus is, you will be helping that person to occupy their time, too.

3. Leave the house every day. It's definitely alright to have a lazy day here and there where you just stay in your pajamas. But as a general rule, it is a good idea to get outside at least once each day, even if you do not have a class or another outside commitment. Walk to the corner store, take a jog around the park, do something that gets you out in the fresh air. This is another good way to prevent depression.

4. Work on cleaning and repairs. Tackle all those projects you have been procrastinating from because you never seem to have the time. Deep clean the kitchen, put up new shelves, or paint the bathroom. If you neglect these projects while you actually have the time to do them, you will regret it when you suddenly have a full schedule again.

Sudden unemployment, or even expected seasonal unemployment, can be a shock. However, if you use the time wisely, it can be both productive and relaxing. Sign up for those quilting classes, take a daily walk around the park, write your novel, and clean your house. You never know how quickly this time will pass- think of it as a gift, and use it!
