3 Ways To Get Better At Black & White Photography

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

If you want to talk about the forms of art out there, black & white photography may be one of the less prevalent. I am sure that any photographer will tell you that their work has been helped by the use of color, seeing as how different hues can convey various moods. However, this particular form of photography is limited, at least at the onset. You can become effective at it, as long as effort is put forth. As a matter of fact, these 3 methods are likely to help matters.

One of the ways to become good at black & white photography is to work with what you have. For example, you may only be able to shoot in color, depending on the camera you have, which seemingly makes matters more difficult for you. This couldn't be any further from the truth, especially with the ever increasing focus on digital media. Bring the photos you've taken to your computer, change them with a photo editing program of your choice, and go from there.

Black & white photography will also hinge on the level of lighting you decide to use. Many photographers, in this respect, insist on utilizing low lighting because it usually comes out better on the pictures taken. Very rarely do they take pictures when there is too much sunlight, as this can negatively impact the pictures taken. Be mindful of the light that's seen, as this will help you become more proficient at black & white photography.

There's also the matter of how colors translate throughout the process of black & white photography. If you're taking a picture of a subject that has several vibrant colors, those will be considered highlights, since they stand out. However, the best way to contrast this is through the usage of darker colors, which will look to be either dark gray or black by the end. If you know how colors end up appearing through black & white photography, you'll become more proficient at this endeavor.

Black & white photography, while striking in its own respect, requires a certain degree of effort in order for it to be done well. There are so many visuals that can be created, through the usage of lenses, but the photographs taken may vary in quality. Shouldn't the quality in question always be positioned at a high level? In order for this to be done, the aforementioned strategies should be noted. Who's to say that they won't create better works in the future?
