Follow Your Dream With Acting Classes In Los Angeles

By Luisa Sharpe

Very few actors become famous overnight. For most, their career started with hard work, going from audition to audition, waiting tables to pay the rent in between low-paying acting jobs and never giving up on their dream. If you want to become a movie or stage star, however, one of the first steps is to learn the thespian craft and there is no better way to do it than with acting classes in Los Angeles.

To have a successful career as an actor, you need talent. However, you also need more. There are many talented musicians out there but the ones who make it big are usually the ones who have studied their instrument, mastered the necessary techniques and keep practicing every day. In the same way, a great actor is one who has received proper training in the thespian arts and have learned different techniques.

An example of the type of training you'd need is knowing how to adjust your technique according to the medium. On stage, the audience can't really appreciate your facial expressions unless these are quite exaggerated. Using these over-the-top expressions for a film close-up would look silly, however. In fact, a good film actor can convey a thought or an emotion with the smallest movement of facial muscles.

Drama classes will also how to adapt the way you use your voice for the stage or for film. You'll learn how to speak clearly and audibly and you may even find out how to do different accents. Furthermore, you'll learn how to act with your entire body. Stage fighting is usually included in the curriculum too.

People who just stumble into a career as an actor without any training are often very limited in their scope. With training, you learn everything from comic timing to how to cry on demand. You learn how to act in comedies, dramas, musicals, Shakespearean plays and action films, so you have a wider range as an actor and can choose from more roles.

Taking classes not only help you to hone your craft as an actor. It will also teach you about other aspects of the performing arts, such as warming up your voice and body before a performance, applying make-up and approaching auditions. You may even learn about some of the behind-the-scenes activities such as lighting, camera work and publicity.

A big advantage of taking acting classes is that they focus on practical work. This means that you'll get plenty of opportunities not only to watch other actors in action but also to act in stage and short film productions yourself. Agents and other industry players are often invited to the school's stage shows and may decide that you're the talent they've been looking for, which could mean your first big break as an actor.

Of course your chances of being spotted by a casting agent are bigger if you attend drama school right there where the action is. Los Angeles is the perfect place to learn acting because this is where the television and film industries are based. Most of the institutions where you'll be able to take acting classes in the city are located in or near Hollywood.
