Why Hair Coloring Is Growing In Popularity

By Judy Sullivan

Over the ages people have always devised ways to improve their looks, to conform to the dictates of fashion or even to look younger. Hair coloring must be one of the most common methods employed to achieve all of the above. It is a hugely popular method of obtaining a different look, whatever the motivation behind the desire to look different. Dyeing the head is, without a doubt, the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world today.

The practice is as hold as humankind itself. About seventy years ago, only seven per cent of American women used dye. This was mostly for the purpose of concealing a greying mane and the subsequent color was almost always the same as the original. Today more than three quarters of American women use dye and they are much more adventurous, changing their color according to fashion or personal taste.

It is not only women that treat themselves with dyeing. Men increasingly use dye to get rid of grey hair and to even change their appearance. The practice is even prevalent amongst teenagers. Using dye is not always for the purpose of obtaining a new color. In some cases the original color is simply enhanced, in others streaks or highlights are desired.

Anyone that wants to change or maintain their color has two basic options. On the one hand it is cheaper to purchase a home kit, but there are inherent dangers such as an unsatisfactory color or damage to the hair. Many consumers can testify to disastrous results that took a lot of effort and added expenditure to fix. A salon is much more expensive but it generally provides better results.

Most dyes that are deemed to be permanent, which means that it will outlast at least twelve shampoos, contain at least one of two chemicals that may cause harm. The first one is ammonia. This chemical splits the cuticles, allowing the dye to penetrate deeply. The other one is peroxide, which can cause dryness and a loss of volume. Most dyes also contain alcohol and this can also cause dryness and split ends.

Because dyes contain potentially harmful chemicals it is deemed more sensible to rather visit a salon to obtain a new color. Professionals know all about the harmful effects of these chemicals and they use additional products to counteract the negative effects. Home products do not always warn consumers about the negative effects and users therefore do not always take corrective steps.

There are benefits to be had from dyeing. Many psychologists agree that even basic changes to the look of an individual can bolster their self confidence and sense of self worth. Many others feel that they need to look younger in order to thrive in a business environment that is increasingly youth oriented. In fact, the reason for dyeing is not really important. Everyone has the right to choose a look.

Hair coloring has been around for many thousands of years and it remains one of the best ways I which to obtain a new look. In these days the practice is safer and there are almost no salons that cannot offer these services professionally. It is fun and it can do much to bolster confidence and if this is the case, why not.
