Only divorce files are considered by the court as supporting documents to prove the dissolution of a marriage. Before you tie the knot with your lover, it would not hurt if you check if he or she got involved in a previous marriage or not so you will not have to deal with legal problems one of these days. To get the records, you have to place a formal request to the county Clerk of Court that has the records you need. You must be able to provide the full name of either of the couple. You can also include additional information that you know about the couple such as their address, date of birth, or occupation to make the search less time-consuming. If you cannot submit your request personally at the Clerk of Court, you can mail it. But that would mean that the return period will be much longer, usually taking two to three weeks. There are corresponding fees for getting the records and they vary depending on which county you are getting them from.

If you want another way of obtaining the records, you can get them from online service providers. There are those that specialize in providing divorce records to the public. However, there are a number of service providers out there and, sadly, not all of them are legit. Perform a quick background check on them first to see if they are credible or not.
