Wedding Event Designers Roles And Responsibilities

By Eliza Mendoza

Wedding event designers seem to have glamorous and exciting jobs but the work and hours behind their success is detailed and grueling. They must be knowledgeable of many different aspects of this competitive business and be willing to give up their own personal lives right before the big events. This type of career can be extremely fulfilling as it helps happy couples get off to a great start in their new lives together.

Learning to become a designer may require working under someone else with exceptional skills in this business for several months or a few years. Attending bridal shows and helping friends with their receptions can also give you insight and experience. Courses in flower design, menu planning and event planning will give you an definite advantage toward working in this profession.

The first step toward creating the perfect reception would be to assist the bride in choosing her invitations. She may desire something elegant, simple or eclectic. Reading your client and helping her choose what best suits the personality of the couple can be a challenge but after time you will begin to pick up clues about the couple that will assist you in helping them make the best decisions. Stress the importance of and assist with proofing the invitations thoroughly before they go to press.

Linens may also be a big decision. They should match the theme or colors of the reception. They can be patterned or solid or even a mixture if the couple so desires. It is your job to find them exactly what they want at the right price. You must also work with the reception venue to set up the schedules of placing the linen on tables to work with the food service team that is setting up the tables.

Special lighting can totally change the atmosphere of your event. Use up-lighting to give the room an extra-romantic glow. Spotlights will highlight the special moments of the evening. Your responsibility will be to get the best lighting products that will achieve the lighting goals for the least amount of money.

Flowers can make a wedding truly spectacular. This position requires a knowledge of the different types of blooms and arrangements for an event such as this. Forming relationships with local florists can help keep pricing down and quality consistent.

Arranging the tables to assist with flow and the reception agenda can be a nightmare. Deciding on the shape and size of the guest tables, whether to have a head table or not, and who is going to sit with each other can be a major challenge. Understand that changes will occur almost all the way up to the date of the wedding and know that in this situation, that there is "nothing as constant as change."

Wedding event designers have exciting, fast-paced careers. They must be multi-taskers and have exceptional people skills. They should also be able to work anytime of the day or night, including weekends. Although the hours may be long and the work very hectic, it is a truly fulfilling and interesting position.
