As a strategy for improvement of sexual interest and function, sex therapy Monterey County, can often be a positive resolution for anyone experiencing these or other issues related to sex and intimacy. While this is the case, sex therapists can also work with individuals whom consider oneself a sex addict and provide methods of coping which do not involve sexual abuse.

Sexual issues often include, premature ejaculation, pain during sex, a lack of arousal, a very high sex drive, A-typical sexual interests, lack of confidence, disability, illness and aging. Whereas, there are also therapists whom specialize in counseling members of the LGBTQ+ community. While offering counseling to LGTBQ+ individuals, there is no conversion therapy involved in the process.

Most modern therapists working in this area integrate psychological and medical methods into the counseling process. For example, if an individual is having impotency problems, the counselor may suggest the individual talk with a physician about prescribing Viagra. Whereas, if one is having problems with premature ejaculation, a prescription for Paxil might be an option. In most cases, the counselor still provides treatment as long as client continues to have issues in these areas.

Sex therapists are often going to require the individual go through a series of psychological and medical tests before providing treatment. For, dysfunction in some cases can be related to a psychogenic or somatic condition. Some examples of these conditions are, impotence as related to circulatory issues, performance anxiety, sexual orientation and Diabetes Type II. While most psychotherapists provide treatment on a long term basis, sexual issues can often be resolved in the short-term.

Licensed psychologists and psychiatrists can provide sex therapy as long as one has been certified as a psychotherapist. In the United States, a psychologist or psychiatrist can become certified after completing a series of continuing education courses and acquiring a license specific to the area. Whereas, these individuals can treat a mental illness in which sexual dysfunction is a side effect without such a license.

A new field has developed in which sex surrogates assist people at home in which the surrogate participates in exercises as part of helping individuals or couples practice and develop new and improved skills. As might be expected, the practice is extremely controversial. Sex therapists, on the other hand, do not have sexual contact with clients though often collaborate with surrogates on how each helped to resolve various sexual issues.

Sexual surrogacy and sex therapy are two different and distinct practices. In sex therapy sessions are focused on specific symptoms rather than on underlying conflicts and complications related to a marriage or sexual relationship. In addition, sex therapy can be provided to any adult of legal age as long as the individual is competent in the act of sexual behavior. While not a licensed psychologist, these individuals can also discuss and treat emotional issues which may be disrupting a normal life sex life.

When people age, hormone levels change, thus often resulting in a lower libido. While this can be concerning, it is actually a normal process of aging. While most people respond well to sex therapy in this area, there can be exceptions. Although, a number of people have been able to revive libidos through a combination of physical and emotional counseling along with any required medication or, when it comes men, a penal implant.
