Draw Closer To God With Guided Christian Meditation

By Pamela Harris

There is no doubt that people today are stressed due to the hectic pace of life. Stress contributes to many of our health problems. It also means that our heads are full of unwanted mental chatter and we just cannot seem to become still. We become distracted so easily as thoughts keep intruding and our minds keep wandering. When this happens, guided Christian meditation can be used to clear our minds, keep us rooted in the present and allow us to experience what it is to abide in Him.

Christians may have the mistaken view that meditating is a new age or anti-Christian practice that is not meant for believers. The Bible itself speaks often about meditating and these kinds of meditations are focused on the Word of God. Meditating can be seen as a tool that can be used in many different ways. Christians are able to use it to draw closer to God and experience His presence.

Being with God and abiding in His presence is central to these meditations. In the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible, Martha was busy cleaning and cooking and she became upset with Mary because she was just sitting at the feet of Jesus. Jesus commended Mary for her choice.

Many of these meditations are designed to accomplish a specific goal such as dealing with anxiety or finding healing for a physical illness. They are designed to offer prompts that help to focus the mind, create calm, or create the right atmosphere for healing.

As believers realize the benefits of meditating, they are more interested in learning how to go about it. Some meditations consist of prayers and reading of scriptures. Others have music and inspirational words. There are many different options available and the choice will depend on individual needs. Some people are simply wanting to draw closer to God while others may have a specific goal like becoming free from anxiety or learning to let go of fear.

Toxic thoughts and emotions are able to prevent us from hearing God. Opportunities are created when meditating for an intimate connection with God and being able to hear what He is saying. Spiritual hearing becomes clearer and listeners become more sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

The stress of our fast-paced lifestyles can dramatically affect our health, causing blood sugar problems, increasing blood pressure, inhibiting immunity and hampering the ability to heal. This is why so many physicians are recommending the practice of meditating to people today. Meditating causes blood pressure to drop, the heart rate to decrease, muscles to relax and the immune system to be strengthened.

When it comes to Biblical meditations, believers are not only benefiting from the physical benefits but also from the power that comes from abiding in the presence of God and meditating on His Word. Meditating is a tool and together with faith, it allows God to transform believers inwardly. Some of the benefits this brings to believers are greater peace of mind, more clarity, as well as more compassion and understanding for oneself and others.
