Throughout the history of humanity many varied forms of communication have been used. From the very simple messages that had to be delivered physically on horseback, or through the smoke of a fire, to the world wide web and cellular technology that is now widespread. There are however still older forms of communication still available to use, mostly as a joke though. One of these forms of communication is the singing telegrams bay area residents use around the globe.
The telegram is a very old method of communication. Being the most widely used communication method before the invention of the telephone it was basically a signal containing a written message sent through wire or broadcast. In its earliest incarnation it was received through dots and dashes, that is to say through Morse code.
Telegrams were used mostly to deliver news of some kind, usually quite serious news. They were not used to make idle chit chat, much like many of us to do today on our mobile telephones. Telegrams that are sung are a way more humorous way of sending messages.
Telegrams that sing were invented way back in 1933. Popularized by a large telegram company, the first one was the brainchild of the public relations officer for the company at that time. That day they had received a message wishing a Hollywood celebrity a happy birthday, from one of their fans. The PR officer had the brilliant idea of having the operator sing the message over the phone. That was the first telegram that was sung.
Because of the serious nature of telegrams the PR officer wanted to change that view and give the public another use of the telegram. He wanted to increase their amount of business by doing this, however the higher ups were not impressed with what he had done and thought that he had turned their company into something ridiculous.
The invention of the telephone made telegrams obsolete, so very few telegrams were being sent from the 1960's and on wards. In fact the only incantation of a telegram that is really used to this day is that of the singing telegram. Evolving from that first sung happy birthday message it has since turned into a humorous way of delivering good news.
Nowadays there are many different private companies all over the world that offer this telegram service, as it is still very popular. Instead of a telephone delivery it is now delivered in person, making it much more theatrical. The messenger is required to dress up, usually along the theme of what the message is of and it is sung to the recipient personally. There are other options however, a popular way of doing it is to burn the whole performance onto a dvd and send it to the person, if they cannot be contacted through the traditional means or are in another country.
This form of communication, although it is one of the oldest is now unrecognizable from it's original form. With silly costumes and humorous messages taking place of the dots and dashes, or often serious news that was received over the wire.
