Some Christian Arguments Against Evolution

By Patty Goff

Evolutionists believe that life evolved from matter in a random process. Christians argue that it is God who created the universe in a far from random manner. Both views are supported by scientists who offer up evidence for their views. Christian arguments against evolution can sometimes be very subjective and religious in nature when in fact, there is scientific evidence that they could use to back up their claims.

One of the scientific theories Christians use as an argument is that of thermodynamics. They refer to the second law of thermodynamics which states that complex systems become simpler and less orderly over time. This law contradicts the contention of evolutionists that progress occurs over time and systems go from being more simple to more complex and more ordered than disordered.

The randomness of the process that evolutionists espouse is a problem for Christians. There are scientists too who concede that intelligent design seems to be the most satisfactory way to explain the complexities of life in all its forms. Christians also argue that the idea of systems evolving bit by bit does not make sense. The reproductive system, for example, would need to be complete and fully functioning in order for reproduction to occur.

The primary evidence evolutionists use to substantiate their view is that of fossil remains. They believe that fossil evidence exists that proves the development of humans from primate ancestors. However, Christians argue that any information obtained from fossils are subject to interpretation. The only foolproof way to know how old they really are is to have been there when death occurred. The fossil record still does not demonstrate an unbroken chain of life from simple to complex, despite discoveries that claim to bridge the gaps.

Genetic mutations are regarded by evolutionists as important for progress. For example, a giraffe with a longer neck can eat more leaves. A green crocodile would have more chance of survival than a white one which would probably starve to death. Christians, on the other hand, argue that mutations are not beneficial and have in fact resulted in many human diseases.

Some Christians argue that the very complexity of life, such as a simple strand of human DNA, proves the existence of a Creator. This is a flawed argument that cannot be accepted by scientists. However, there are scientists who agree that intelligent design is a probability. There are even those who agree that there is no other satisfactory explanation for life in all its complexity.

Molecular biology is a field that has provided fuel for Christians. Dr. Michael Denton conducted tests in order to compare the same cells in different species. He compared the make-up of the amino acids in these different organisms. His conclusion was that the results did not support the theories of traditional evolutionists of first fish, then amphibian, reptile and finally mammal.

Numerous different arguments are used by Christians to support their belief in God as the Creator of the universe. The basis of this belief is what they read in the Bible. Evolutionists feel that because of this belief, they distort facts to support their belief. However, there are numerous well regarded scientists too who support the idea of intelligent design rather than random chance.
