Sand tray is a technique that is becoming increasingly recognized as a powerful therapeutic technique that facilitates effective healing in an environment that is not intimidating to the patient. It is a technique that can be used with both children and adults and it has proven effective in cases where the clients are resistant to express themselves as a result of being afraid to open up. Therefore sand tray therapy can be used for those who have difficulty in verbal expressions.

The technique often is used on adolescents and kids as they normally find it hard to express themselves in words and properly articulate their thoughts and feelings. Therapists usually provide sand trays, eaters, and miniatures that are variant. These include cars, buildings, trees, human figures, or other natural items, fantasy among others. The miniatures allow clients an opportunity to create a world that articulates their creativity.

Nonetheless, creativity is not the major motive of the exercise. Sometimes patients can voice their creative inabilities but it is said that no standard forms of creativity is actually required. The key objective is the revealing the story behind their world. Once this is complete, a therapist will provide assistance in relating the depictions to the real experiences that a client has undergone.

This therapeutic tool remains effective in articulating non-verbal communications like portraying images that may be in mind. Clients do not have to hold conversations with the therapist but may express their feelings, perceptions, emotional conflicts and thoughts by using with miniatures and soil type. It fosters personal development and raises the space of imagination.

This tool aids in creating awareness of emotional conflicts that was previously not known. As these emotional conflicts are brought to light, the therapist is able to share with the client suitable ways in which they can be resolved. The use of this exercise promotes self-awareness and improves their expressive styles including verbal communication.

This therapeutic tool had been proven most effective with young children who are not quite experienced in expressing intricate thoughts and perceptions. They are allowed to tell it through the creation of different imaginative worlds using the sand and toys which are less threatening to them.

As much as it is more beneficial to children, it is also an efficient activity for teenagers and adults. This becomes it allows the client and therapist to create a deep relationship faster as compared to the use of words alone. It opens up a way that struggling adolescents and adults can freely express themselves about any traumas, unresolved loss, and intense family issues among others.

It is just not used on individuals but also remains applicable to married couples or even groups of people. It assists in paving the way for discussions that clients may previously have wished not to talk about. Therapists allow clients to remain in control hence creating some safe place for clients to relive trauma as well as establishing gradual healing processes.
