Staten Island Pediatrics & The Benefits Of Moderate Gaming

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

For many parents, video games are seen as less than attractive in terms of social growth. Many children play these games for several hours in a day and while this can be a problem, more moderate amounts of playtime may actually have their own sets of benefits. For those who are curious as to what these entails, those who work in the realm of Staten Island pediatrics will be able to offer tremendous insight. It's time to give this particular interest another look.

The benefits associated with gaming isn't exactly a new talking point and authorities like GPM Pediatrics can say the same. Keep in mind that, in the past, gaming has been linked to heightened hand-to-eye coordination as well as greater reading skills, depending on the types of games being played. These games aren't just toys; they can serve as escapes into digital worlds where children and adults will be able to enjoy themselves. Just as importantly - and specialists in Staten Island pediatrics - they may be able to learn something along the way.

PBS posted an article that went into detail about this subject. Specifically, did you know that children who are between the ages of 10 and 15, with shorter play time, are able to grow as far as overall mentality is concerned? It seems as though this has been able to help them enjoy life much more, all the while place less emphasis on their "externalizing and internalizing problems." I believe that this particular study is strong as far as casting video games in a positive light is concerned.

Of course, this shouldn't be abused and PBS made it a point to mention this as well. If children played more than three hours each day, they were likelier to be less adjusted in terms of social activity. It's easy to see why, since there's only so much a child can develop if he or she is positioned in front of a TV with a controller in their hands every single day. Eventually, growth must be done and the best way for this to be conducted is through interaction with the outside world.

Even though gaming should be moderated to an extent, there's no doubt that this particular hobby has more than its fair share of positives. On one hand, children are able to gain a sense of entertainment as well as assistance as far as growth is concerned. With this in mind, it's easy to see why parents may look at reasonable lengths of gaming with a more positive mindset. For those who still aren't sold on gaming as a helpful tool, there is much more information to take into consideration.
