Considerations Before A Jewish Interfaith Marriage

By Kathleen Russell

Maintaining an interfaith marriage is one of the most significant challenges that most couples have to face. Most denominations have over the years criticized them. However, this does not mean that they do not work. Currently, Jewish interfaith marriage is becoming more popular with the highest percentage embracing them. The challenge can be daunting especially since the couples are coming from different faiths. The following are things to consider before getting in the union.

One of the essential things in any union is communication. Couples are advised to have open discussions on their fears regarding their different religions. However, this does not mean that one has to push their partner into having the discussion. In such a case, the partners are advised to come up with ways to address other pressing issues affecting their union. Thus having an open talk on their faith opens more ways and the couple learns how to respect them.

It is important to consider having an open discussion with the partner and even the extended family. However, the most crucial part is maintaining high levels of respect for the religion of others to avoid any risk of conflicts. While having the conversation, people should inquire about the faith of others. Through this, the couple gets to establish just how committed they are to their faith.

They should get to discuss any chances of having their children. This is relevant especially since they have different religions. The partners should decide on the most convenient way to educate their kids to understand both the religions or one or none. The decision will have a significant impact on the learning institutions and childcare facilities the kids will attend. Regardless of the decision, they are advised to show mutual respect and encourage them to make their choices.

Most people will ignore the role that premarital mentors play in any union. However, there is no need to feel defeated or inferior when choosing to attend these sessions. This is one way that they can receive the help they need. The counselor will guide them through several ways they can use to solve their problems amicably. The mentor will start by examining how compatible the couple is. Pick a counselor that has no affiliations to any religious group to avoid conflict.

Most couples will want to plan and enjoy their vacations with their loved ones. However, there is need to take into consideration the difference in their traditions. For instance, some will want to have a Christmas tree over Christmas. Therefore the couple needs to agree how best to incorporate both of their traditions for more fun during the vacation.

Regardless of the nature of their religion, it is imperative for the couple to make their home the safest place they can be without having to remember their religious differences. One should examine what their partner can comfortably accommodate and how they embrace their traditions.

Regardless of their differences, one of the most important things they need to take into account is the need to appreciate their differences. They are advised to celebrate the religions of each other to avoid conflicts.
