By Ann Bennett

If you have decided competitive dancing is what you want to do with your life, find a suitable trainer as early as possible. Prepare well for your first dance competitions New York.

The problem is that finding the right person is not easy. It is akin to looking for someone to teach you how to speak the English language. Native speakers are a natural choice, but not every one of them has teaching ability. The best person is almost always a native who has acquired training on how to teach others.

You might be tempted to look for a professional who possesses the most technical qualification. That might not be the best approach. This is because they might have all the technical qualification but cannot help you because they are not a talented trainer. You should find someone who has been practicing from a young age, an enthusiast who has a deep love for the art and can coach someone.

It is a good idea to watch a live class. You might not know a lot concerning dancing, but watching a session can tell you much about the level of comfort in the students and if they feel tense. You will be able to see how the trainer behaves. Some might have the habit of ignoring the average student while focusing only on the naturally talented or the beautiful ones.

Be observant, miss nothing during your visit. See what you feel about the level of organization or the lack of it in the session. You might feel there just is too much talking while the main activity does not seem to be receiving adequate attention. You also need to know that some instructors have been known to talk in a disrespectful way to students.

Interview some students after the session. Have them share with you what opinions they have about their instructor. Ask them whether they think the class is fun. Some instructors might not want you to talk to their students. Some might also try to sell you into the idea. Assess all these situations and when you do not feel comfortable, walk out. Depend on your judgment.

Most probably, you have one or two friends or people at work who have the same aspirations as you. Talk to them and ask to share their experiences. Ask if they could recommend their instructor. If their trainer has satisfied them, they will most likely make you feel all right and help you become an accomplished dancer. Ask about their experience and whether it is a full-time job or a part-time career.

If you are serious about becoming a champion, you should no doubt look for a person who is an international champion. If you are naturally talented or have a lot of experience, look for someone with a lot of technical qualifications. It can be hard, but you must find a trainer who knows how to keep it simple and much fun.
