The various Adventist churches came up from the Millerite movement, which existed in the 1840s in the state of New York in the United States. William Miller is the individual who started this denomination, after predicting that Jesus would return in 1844.

This prophecy by Miller was based on bible verses and was able to persuade several people into becoming members of the new church. In 1844 many of the new converts were disappointed when Adventist of Jesus did not happen that they went back to their churches. It came to be believed later on that Miller had made the right calculations but had misunderstood the bible. In October of 1844, Jesus was not to return to the earth but enter the holiest part of heaven.

For over two decades, the SDA group comprised of small groups of people bound loosely. These people came from various churches but had their faith in the Sabbath doctrine.
