At some point or the other in life we all reach a situation that makes us question our very existence. Why are we on this earth? Is there a purpose in life? What are we meant to do or be? While nobody has been come up with any clear answers to such question, various theories do exist. And for peaceful living, following one of these becomes a wise thing to do.
Many seek solutions in the religious, spiritual or scientific path they choose to follow. Goals are set by the practices of their following. Lifestyles are assumed on this basis too. And more than anything else, the answers to deep questions can often be found in the theories and beliefs of this chosen path.
Following a religious guru, for example, gives many a certain outlook to life and they end up practicing the teachings and ways of that person. This gives a sense of purpose and meaning to their very existence. Any questions that arise are answered by the religious teachings they follow.
If one believes in a certain scientific theory or system, it can lead to the providing of answers too. Most of the methods adopted in life will be found to be in accordance with this belief, and the person will tend to seek solutions to daily dilemmas also within this belief system
Not everyone on this earth, however, is fortunate to have a cause or following they can connect with. Not everyone has something to hold on to for searching meanings and looking for answers. A lot of mortals simply spend their life lost and aimless, only because they could not find a road they could travel, a mantra they could live by, or a calling that could define their beings.
There are also many who spend substantial amount of time pondering over this very question. They wonder why they are on this earth. They wonder what the meaning of their life is. They may even wonder if it is worth living any more if they have not found their purpose.
Spending life mulling over such thoughts is actually the antithesis of this dilemma. Not having a goal should not mean dire fruitlessness of existence. In fact, it is up to a human being to find a goal or an objective and make it the purpose of their life.
To explain this, let us take the example of a musician, or architect, if you please, who neither believes in any religion nor societal pattern. Now this person may choose to make educating street children his mission in life. His purpose in life may be to provide literacy to those not as privileged as him.
Another such instance can be of an untrained botanist who seeks to find the study of a certain kind of weed very fascinating. She could spend hours, and perhaps years, seeking possibilities of the preservation of these weeds, and thrive in the joys of her research and revelations with a select group of peers.
So we see that finding purpose in life is not something that comes from external force. Nor does it get created automatically. Purpose has to be worked upon, it has to be found within.
