Cartoonists & 3 Pointers For Greater Skill Sets

By Katie Arden

Cartoonists may find themselves working in a number of fields during their lives. Some of them may go on to become skilled in comic book creation while others may feel as though animation is the perfect platform for them. Whatever the case may be, though, it's easy to see that they love the work that comes with being a cartoonist. Not only do they enjoy bringing joy to others, through their work, but it provides an outlet that very few other avenues can boast.

If you're curious as to how to become the best cartoonist, there are many points to consider. Of course, it may be easy to simply enroll in an art school which allows degrees, in this realm of learning. However, what if these students require more knowledge? What if they want to cover as many bases as possible before they get involved in the working world? Cartoonists can bolster their skills and these 3 methods will prove to be more than useful.

If you're going to be a cartoonist, you must have an idea in mind before you start drawing. You're probably not going to get very far by simply winging it, since the finest ideas are those which are rooted in some degree of steadiness. You must be able to create ideas, early on, if your goal is become the best cartoonist you can be. Take it upon yourself to brainstorm, as this will be the first step towards creating the best comics and means of animation possible.

Once characters are set in place, it's important for narratives to be created after the fact. Now, this does not mean that the narratives themselves have to be deep, especially if they are created for the purpose of developing half hour-long episodes of a television show. However, they must be cohesive enough to where they are reasonably easy to follow. As you can probably imagine, cartoonist or not, an endeavor like this is going to require a heavy degree of story-boarding.

In my view, I believe that it is most important for cartoonists to have fun with the work they do. After all, you have the ability to create striking works of art and stories that anyone can become engrossed in. Yes, the work of a cartoonist may be drawn out for long periods of time. However, what this means is that you'll have to put forth even more effort. It will be worth it, as you will soon find that the work you create will be the strongest that can be imagined.
