How To Design Disabled Ramps Properly

By Rosella Campbell

It is the responsibility of a contractor to install the ramp for the sake of the individuals suffering from mobility problems. Not only the installation, they are also given the task to design the said structure. Your chosen contractor must know how to do this so that you can make sure that the latter is someone capable of making quality disabled ramps.

Even though the contractor is the one who is mainly responsible with both the designing and installation, you got to make sure that you understand what designing entails. If you do, then you will find it easier to understand why the installation costs you much. Here are those designing details you have to pay close attention to.

Length. It is only natural for you to decide on how long the said structure should be. The length is important, especially when you bear in mind the situation of the individual suffering from mobility problems. Even when you are designing for a public place, you will still have to think about the length of this structure.

Location. You have to think about where it is best to install the said structure. It is true that it is logical to have the said structure installed on the front door. However, it is not that pleasing to the eyes to have the ramp there. Look for another place where the said structure looks beautiful but is still convenient for the individuals it is meant for.

Next, you have to determine what materials you will use. You have the option of choosing between the metal one and the wooden one. It is highly recommended to choose the wooden option, though. After all, it is actually more durable to use as well as less expensive compared to the second option.

There is the landings too. It is only natural to consider the incline to be climbing up. However, that should not be all to the said installation. It is better for you to make sure that there is a flat somewhere along its length. This flat area is considered to be the landing or resting place for the person with disability.

Railing. This detail is very important, especially if the one who is using this structure does not use a power wheelchair. Manual wheelchairs usually need the individual riding in them to work themselves up the incline. To help them get the power to pull themselves up, then the railing is a necessary detail.

There is the door entry next. It is important for you to have a small incline to the door. This is so that the person with disability will find it easier to enter the establishment. Just make sure that this incline is a gentle slope. Install handrails there too to avoid having the person roll off the platform.

Permit. You should always rely on the contractor to willingly acquire the permit to build this structure for you. If the contractor says that it is okay to do the construction without the permit, then you better look for another contractor to hire for this job. It is illegal to construct this structure without the proper permit.
