By Douglas Lewis

Photography has become a way of life today. Some years back, photography was taken seriously as a hobby or a full-time or part-time job. People depended on it for a livelihood. Today, things have been changed by the introduction of various technologies, especially smartphones. Several tasks that were previously impossible are now possible with the use of smartphones. Users of thee phones can take as many shots as they want anywhere without restrictions.

It is also possible to install formatting software in smartphones so that photos taken can be edited to enhance color and other aspects of the photos. People share the photos they take and edit on social media such as Facebook and instagram. However, the presence of smartphones and the ability to take and edit photos does not make everyone a professional photographer. In Dallas portrait photographer has to undergo training and perfect the trade through years of experience.

Photographers do not only take photos, they also make a living out of it, they also have a career path, specialized knowledge, and a business model in the field. It takes specialized knowledge in photography such as staging, shadows, lighting, use of various equipment and camera models, and an eye for images and angles.

Like most artistic jobs, there is no definite way of becoming a professional in photography. People take different paths, but end up in the same job. The first step in becoming a professional in photography is deciding the kind of photographer one would like to become. The various types are photojournalists, scientific photographers, commercial photographers, industrial photographers, portrait photographers, and fine arts photographers.

In most cases, portrait photographers work in studios. Clients visiting the studios can have their image taken on various backgrounds. Where necessary, pictures can be printed and placed in frames according to the preferences of the client. Portrait photographers also leave their studios to meet with clients in schools, offices, homes, and parks among other places. They sometimes have to take photos while on such meetings.

The field of photography entails several different responsibilities. Self-employed photographers take clients from the public. Once they accept a client, they must ensure that they understand their needs well by discussing the kind of images they need and the purpose of the images. Based on the specific use the photos are meant for, these professionals also advise clients appropriately. They also engage in arranging still life objects, backgrounds, props, products, and scenes for photo shooting.

The work of photography involves liaising with professionals in other fields. Some of the professionals one may need to liaise with are commissioning editors, art directors, graphic designers, writers, gallery managers, and picture researchers. Photographers usually communicate with photographic subjects during photo shoot sessions. They communicate to direct, encourage, and ease tension in the subjects.

A degree is not mandatory for one to enter this field. However, it is more advantageous to have a degree or an equivalent professional qualification. Some of the subjects in which one can have a degree include graphics, photography, media studies, fine art, digital imaging, and art and design.
